Math

We're refreshing our addition facts. These seem to be pretty good. I'm looking for them to get 55/55 three times to prove they know thier basic addition facts.

In multiplication we're working on 2 and 4 time tables. It's still not automatic for everyone. Keep practicing them at home.

Once a week they get a review booklet. It always comes out on Friday and is do on Wednesday.

We're also working on place value and understanding the meaning of numbers up to
10 000.

Language Arts - I have an assignment that students will be working on in school this week, They will be given class time to work on it but they may do additional work at home. If they are not finished by Friday the break the following week is there for them to complete it. I want the students to take ownership of their learning on this so I am asking them to evaluate their work as they go by filling the chart in on the back of the assignment. Your help as a parent is important to the success of this as if you ask questions and just offer suggestions my hope is that your child will take responsibility for their learning and produce something they are proud to share.
The following is the assignment the students need to complete:

Frindle Four – due February 23

Now that you have read the first six chapters of the book these are the tasks that I want you to complete.

1. From the book find at least five interesting words from the chapters. Two of them may be one syllable (beat) and the others must have at least two syllables (beats).

2. Copy the sentence from the book where you found your words in your very best handwriting. Record the page number and paragraph where your word is located.

3. Word meanings – If you can tell from the sentence what the word means write the definition for the word. Otherwise look it up in your dictionary.

4. Write a paragraph with at least four sentences using your words. Please underline them.

5. Pick your favourite two-syllable word and make a web of synonyms (words that have the same meaning) for your word. If your word has a homonym (word sounds the same but spelled differently) example: hear – listen, here – a place. Add that to the web. Decorate the web with pictures and colour.

6. Choose the word you find as the most interesting or is your favourite (the word must be at least 6 letters long or you have to check with me if it’s OK before you use it). Write me a letter explaining why you want this letter to be included on your spelling test next week.

7. Plan a creative way to help your classmates learn your word for the spelling test or figure out a pneumonic device to remember how to spell your word.
Example “Frindle” f -found r -red I -ink n –near d –doug’s l –little e –elephant
Frindle – Found red ink near doug’s little elephant.

8. At this time create a web in your Frindle scribbler where you choose your favourite character and make a web describing the character. For each quality your character has find something in the book that shows that; for example if Nick is kind where do we know that from in the story.
