The students have been working on describing and drawing how oil is taken from the oil sands and this assignment will be due on Tuesday, January 13. Also due the same day, are the answers to three short questions that the students wrote in their binders. These questions are:
1. Why is oil, gas and coal so important to Alberta? Name 3 reasons.
2. Describe how we use oil, gas and coal in our everyday lives. Give one example for each fossil fuel.
3. How is the land used to extract oil from the oil sands? What happens to the land after they are finished?
Next week, we will be discussing alternative sources of energy as well as the role of agriculture in Alberta.
Have a good weekend!

Social Studies
Hello everyone and welcome back!
Mrs. Pederson has left to embark on her new career and I will be resuming Social Studies with the Grade 4 students. We've just started Chapter 3, titled, "Natural Resources In Your Life". Today, the students began a title page which includes their name, the name of the chapter, 2 inquiry questions (found on p. 67) and pictures of natural resources found in Alberta. This will be due on Thursday, January 8.
On the back of the title page sheet that I handed out, you will find a list of "I Can" statements. Chapter 3 is divided into 4 parts and the students should be able to confidently respond to these statements at the end of each section. We will be working on the "Leduc Discovery" for all of this week and then moving on to the importance of agriculture next week.
